Itinerary summary
Mexico City
Days 1-3: Arrive in Mexico City and spend three nights in the capital, home to over 20 million people, with many excellent museums, galleries and markets. A half day walking tour takes in the historical centre, including the zócalo (main square), Palacio Nacional and cathedral. The following day head out of the city to visit the impressive pre-Aztec ruins of Teotihuacán and also the shrine of Guadalupe, Mexico's patron saint.
Oaxaca
Days 4-6: Fly to Oaxaca where you spend three nights. This Mexican city is well known for its cuisine (including toasted grasshoppers or chapulines), and traditional crafts such as pottery, weaving and the fantastical wooden alebrijes. Have a tour of the city with a local guide. Also visit the Zapotec site of Monte Albán and the traditional weaving town of Teotitlán del Valle. There will be plenty of time to relax and admire one of the many pretty squares and colourful local markets.
Palenque
Days 7-8: Fly via Mexico City to Villahermosa, the nearest airport to Palenque. Spend two nights here in a lodge set in the jungle near the archaeological site. There will be time to explore the partially jungle-shrouded ruins of Palenque with a local guide.
Mérida
Days 9-10: Fly from Villahermosa to the colonial city of Mérida on the Yucatán peninsula. The city is famous for its colourful woven hammocks and lively colonnaded squares. You will visit the city with a guide and have an afternoon free to explore at your leisure.
Chichen Itzá
Day 11: Driven east to the beautiful and very grand temples and ball courts of Chichén Itzá, staying one night in a property next to the site. You will have free time to visit the archaeological site after the crowds have left.
Riviera Maya
Days 12-14: Continue east to the Caribbean coast for three nights to relax on a white sand beach. Nearby is the only Maya site on a coast, Tulúm, and the wildlife sanctuary of Sian Ka'an. Onward flight connections depart from Cancún.
