Description

A 50 room hotel in the heart of Peru's Sacred Valley, 30 minutes from the town of Ollantaytambo and surrounded by cornfields and mountains. Stays are on a full board basis and include a selection of activities (in small groups).

Activities

A wide selection of activities are available and vary from walking and cycling to visiting local ruins and markets. Tours to Machu Picchu are also operated by the hotel, but at an additional charge and it must be pre-booked (as entry tickets are needed). All activities are in small groups (additional charge for a private excursion) and are chosen with the help of the guides on arrival.

Accommodation

There are two room types, standard and suite. Both have the same view of the cornfields, however the suites are larger.

Our comments

The hotel is part of the famous Explora chain, which has several properties in Chile (Torres del Paine, the Atacama Desert and also on Easter Island) and when combined does mean a discount on the cost of your stay.

When to go

Open year round, but best from May to October (when Peru is generally driest).

My wife loved the experience at the Explora Valle Sagrado particularly because one day she was able to walk at high altitude all day with only the guide, no other people joined the walk that day. I had a similar experience with a day's cycling just me and the guide. The Explora experience is wonderful and with this new one they have certainly spent a lot of money to get it right.
