Wonderfully shot BBC trilogy of Brazil's lesser visited regions including the vast, freshwater wetlands of the Pantanal to the south east and the sunning tepui rock formations of the Serra da Capivara National Park to the north east. The series follows the daily antics of otters, jaguars, coatis and capuchin monkeys.
Jaguars and otters
Jaguar in the northern PantanalThe Pantanal is vast and separated into two areas, the north and south. Access to the various fazendas is usually by land (an adventure in itself!) although an overflight is a magnificant way to see the sheer scale of the wetlands. Animals and birds are in abundance, expect to see capybaras, marsh deer and with luck a jaguar or giant otter.
Monkeys and marmosets
MonkeyThe BBC filmed capuchin monkeys in the remote Serra da Capivara National Park. This arid region of Brazil's sertao is truly ancient with many protected archaeological sites of cave paintings. To see a greater variety of monkeys, the Amazon jungle has squirrel, howler and spider monkeys swinging from the trees.
Coatis and butterflies
Butterflies at IguassuAn easier area to visit and view coatis, birds and butterflies is Iguassu Falls. Bands of Coati wander around the National Park and there is an excellent bird and butterfly park. Iguassu is a natural border crossing to Argentina and Paraguay.
