Antarctica and the Falkland Islands recommended reading

Here is a selection of books we like relating to Antarctica and the Falkland Islands:

South: The Endurance Expedition - Ernest Shackleton

South: The Endurance ExpeditionSouth: The Endurance Expedition

The story of Shackleton's second expedition to the South Pole in 1914, in the explorer's own words. The plan was to become the first to traverse the continent, via the south pole, but it soon became a matter of survival.

Some other books worth looking out for are:

  • Antarctica, A Guide to the Wildlife - Tony Soper, Dafila Scott (Illustrator):
A compact handbook featuring all the species of birds, seals and whales likely to be encountered on a voyage to Antarctica, together with their breeding, nesting and feeding habits and the best areas to observe them. The colour illustrations by Dafila Scott accompany detailed wildlife descriptions and make it easy to identify the many different species. Published by Bradt Travel Guides.
  • Antarctica from South America - Bernard Stonehouse, Originator Publishing:
Published in 2006 by expedition leader Bernard Stonehouse, this guide provides information about the history, landing sites, climate and wildlife and will help prepare you for an Antarctic adventure.
  • Birds and Mammals of the Falkland Islands - Robin W and Anne Woods:
A very useful introduction and field guide to the birds, and land and marine mammals, most likely to be encountered in the Falkland Islands, with over 100 photographs for easy identification and a complete checklist of all 227 species believed to have been seen on the islands. There are also sections on topography, vegetation, and climate.
  • Falkland Islands – Bradt Travel Guide – William Wagstaff, Bradt
  • A Visitors Guide To The Falkland Islands – Debbie Summers, Falklands Conservation

Comments

David Campbell’s “Summers in Antarctica” is a wonderfully-written view of the continent from an ecologist-writer who visited at least 4 times.
